Despite health being the ultimate currency of our physical well-being, being healthy is a luxury many of us usually take for granted, and become aware of only when deprived of it.

Although genetically we are more or less exact copies of our ancestors, on an individual level we are products of our environment, and in no small measure of our diet – about which the people of ancient China developed an idea expressed in four characters “医食同源”, meaning that diet and medicine are of the same nature, and are derived from the same root.
The corollary is that a wholesome nourishment can serve as a medicine in its own right, protecting us from getting ill.
